Barry Deloatch
Barry "Gene" Deloatch was a resident of New Brunswick, New Jersey, who was fatally shot by police in the early morning of September 22, 2011.〔(Crowd Protests NJ Police Shooting | NBC New York )〕 The circumstances of his death generated significant controversy, leading to a series of high-profile resident protests and an investigation by the Middlesex County Prosecutor.

==The incident==
Officers approached Deloatch and two other men around 12:12 AM near the intersection of Throop Avenue and Handy Street.〔〔(Friends, relatives of slain New Brunswick man protest, claiming wrongful death | NJ.com )〕 Deloatch fled into a nearby alley and two police officers followed. He fled by crawling under a fence, and Officer Mazan attempted to follow him through the fence while Officer Berdel attempted to go around a nearby house to approach from the other side. Officer Mazan became entrapped and unable to access his weapons. Deloatch began to beat Officer Mazan in the head with a wooden board, and failed to follow Officer Berdel's orders to stop attacking the officer. He was shot twice in the side.〔(Protesters rally against alleged police brutality - The Daily Targum: News )〕 Deloatch had no firearm, but radio recordings state "the suspect was attempting to hit us with a wooden stick".〔 Deloatch was pronounced dead at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital at 12:37 AM.〔
